Sonia organizes class culture fairs, career expos, the annual Christmas program, and serves as graduation sponsor. She is the advisor of the National Junior Society, and encourages school clean-up days and visits to shut-ins. Sonia tutors community children free of cost to prepare them for state exams. She has also worked with students to prepare sermons and has taken them on the road to eight churches to witness to others.

“Simply put, Sonia Barrett is a ‘shining star’ in the Greater New York Conference K-12 system of education,” said Superintendent David Cadavero. “By modeling Jesus in her classroom daily, she has transformed the lives of many of her students with ‘hardened hearts’ from the streets of Brooklyn to students who have dedicated their lives to following Jesus.”

Her outreach extends to disaster relief programs. After the 2010 earthquake, Sonia participated in the Haitian relief Dress A Child Project by sending 40 packages of children’s clothes and shoes she collected. She also assembled a special vespers for prayer and reflection of the lives lost and impacted.

Sonia, a breast cancer survivor, worked while receiving chemotherapy and maintained the spiritual integrity of her classroom. She now participates annually in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk, and has raised more than $1,000 for the American Cancer Society.

Award presentation is scheduled for Saturday, September 17, 2011, at Camp Berkshire.

AAF Board Member Dave Briscoe will present the award to Sonia.
