Catherine Farkas_1With motivational quotes from the Bible, Spirit of Prophecy and other secular sources, one would immediately know that Catherine Farkas has a Christ-centered classroom.

“She is an exceptional teacher who inspires her students for excellence,” said Principal Lionel Jean-Jacques.

She stays in school for long hours after class is dismissed in order to plan and perform extra-curricular activities that enhance students’ performance. It is not uncommon to find her working at school early or late, on weekends, or even on Sundays.

“I frequently am preparing and adjusting lessons for the specific needs of my students and their learning needs,” explains Farkas.

Farkas is recognized as a top-notch educator and as a reading and mathematics specialist.  For the last three years, her students have had improved test scores on the New York State Math Standardized Test and the Iowa Test of Basic Skills Exam.  Some students have scored well above grade level on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in Language Art.

“There have been very few educators that I have had the privilege of working with that have served with distinction on several committees at the local, union, and division levels—Catherine is one of them,” says David Cadavero, Superintendent of Schools of the Greater New York Conference of Seventh-day Adventists.

Each year, she also coordinates a fund-raising program at the school for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital that benefits cancer survivors using Math-a-thon materials, in which over $7,000 has been raised in the last few years.

“It has been my goal to help each student become a friend with Jesus,” Farkas explains. “I am so blessed to be a classroom teacher.“

Catherine Farkas’s award ceremony was on Saturday, June 8, 2013, at Middletown Seventh-day Adventist Church.
