Sara Guzik_1At the end of the 2011/2012 school year, Echo Ridge Christian School was on the verge of shutting down after 50 years of education. Sara Guzik had previously been an elementary and middle school teacher at the school, but left to pursue a career in the medical field. Feeling impressed by God to return to teaching, she volunteered to come back and made staying open possible.

During the summer break, she talked to parents to get their children to attend, recruited volunteers, solicited donations for new iPads, and also put aggressive marketing efforts into place with advertising in the yellow pages, videos, newspapers and parent magazines.

“She is a hard working, conscientious, effective and creative teacher who accomplishes her tasks with great initiative and a positive attitude,” says Coreen Hicks, associate superintendent.

Her personal charisma and dynamic personality motivate students to work hard, and her effective use of positive reinforcement almost completely eliminates the need for negative consequences.

“She holds high standards and the students have responded by focusing more, arguing less, and doing higher quality work,” says Heather Donesky, a parent of a student.

Guzik’s high standards are reflected in her students’ ITBS test results, which are impressively high. Her skills as a teacher are recognized not only on a local scale, but also in places outside of Nevada City. She has served as a member of the Northern California Conference K-12 Board of Education and as a member of a Visiting Committee for a K-8 accreditation evaluation.

“She is dynamic, committed, spiritually minded, disciplined and a visionary,” said Donesky.

Her influence is felt in the lives of student in her classroom, in the school in general and spills over into the life of the church as well. With her on board, support for the school continues to grow, not only in the church but also in the community.

Guzik explains that she finds it important to keeps parents of students well informed through weekly updates and pictures on Facebook as well as through a monthly newsletter.

“While it has been extremely challenging at times, I am truly thankful that God has placed the desire in my heart to teach in an environment where I can share His love with young impressionable minds, daily,“ Guzik says. “I could not ask for a greater gift and I continue thanking God for the many opportunities He has given me in the Adventist education system.”

Sara Guzik’s award ceremony was on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Echo Ridge Christian School.
