Music teacher, Kristian Leukert is extremely effective and highly respected by his students and colleagues at Monterey Bay Academy (MBA).

“He is blessed with an amazing blend of talent, personality, patience, and natural teaching ability that allows him to truly inspire his students,” said Timothy Kubrock, MBA principal.

The music program has become a strong recruiting tool for MBA. Leukert has increased church performances and he records the singing group to distribute to alumni and friends. Leukert also began a two-day music festival that brought 200 students from more than 10 schools.

When Leukert realized that several local SDA elementary schools did not have a band program, he started the Westwinds, a band made up of elementary and home school students. The Westwinds band instills a love for music and prepares students for a stronger MBA band. Leukert also developed a practical training/teaching program to accelerate introductory band programs, and plans to publish it someday.

Under Leukert’s leadership the MBA music groups perform in local community events such as the Salvation Army’s Christmas Toy Drive and Sing for Your Life, a benefit for local high school music programs. They have even performed at the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium and received $550 for their music program!

Drawing inspiration from his father, Leukert views music as “a thing of beauty—a living, breathing testament to the Creator.” When asked why he chose to teach at an Adventist school Leukert replied, “I am not here for me…I believe Adventist education is the surest and best way of winning souls to Christ.”

Award presentation was Sunday, June 3, 2012, at Monterey Bay Academy.

Alumni Awards Foundation Board Member, Arpad Soo, presented the award to Kristian Leukert.

This award has been sponsored by Leukert’s alma mater, La Sierra University. AAF would like to thank La Sierra for training outstanding educators and for partnering in this year’s Excellence in Teaching Awards.
