Buisson Uses Technology to Bring History to Life

2014 EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING AWARD RECIPIENT, ELTICIA BUISSON
Miami Union Academy | Southeastern Conference
Social Studies Teacher

Buisson2Elticia Buisson has always been able to bring history to life using technology—whether she is in the classroom or not.

While on a music tour in Europe with the Alabama Gospel Choir, Buisson used social media to create geography scavenger hunts for her students. She posted pictures and videos of the locations she visited and encouraged the students to use the characteristics of the cities and venues as clues to determine where she was and how far she had travelled.  The assignment allowed students to see their textbooks from another vantage point and made many of them interested in travelling to experience other cultures for themselves.

“She is constantly seeking opportunities to make education exciting and meaningful both inside and outside of the classroom and to make learning practical for our students,” said Shelley Garner, vice principal of Miami Union Academy (MUA). Continue reading…

A Great Pioneer for Adventist Education Passes

Posted on April 29th, 2014
Celebrating the life of Stewart Bainum – mentor to the Renaissance Network.
– by Byron DeFoor, AAF Board Member

0308-HS-8rI first met Mr. Stewart Bainum on April 25, 2010. He candidly asked me, “Five years from now if I have the money to help your foundation accomplish your vision, will the Renaissance Network be sustainable? Is the dream of Adventist education still available?” My answer was, “Yes! That’s exactly what we are working toward.”

And that’s where it all began. I would receive a call from Mr. Bainum’s long-time colleague, Judy Power, and she would lightheartedly say, “The boss wants you to come to Washington, D.C. to see him.” So, I would go. Our time together was memorable as he would tell me many stories about his life.

He would share memories of being a plumber, building houses and apartments, establishing the great Manor Care health services, and ultimately founding the hotel chain that became globally known as Choice Hotels International. Continue reading…

The Blueprint for Adventist Education

Posted on March 28th, 2014

Classroom“A good school always creates a community of meaning and purpose. A good school is actually a community that at it’s very best a student would hate to graduate from,” said Parker Palmer, author of The Courage to Teach.

Martin Doblmeier, award-winning director who brought us “The Adventists’ and “The Adventists 2,” has explored the world of Adventist education through his latest film “The Blueprint.” This multi-story documentary goes into the halls of eight Adventist schools across North America. Your donation will help preserve and improve the education system that has brought countless young people into life-changing relationships with Christ.

With these funds, we plan to add one more school into the Renaissance Network this year. Stay tuned for more details about which school and plans for the future.

We are a Network

Posted on February 6th, 2014

DSCF3806Since we started the Renaissance Network in 2011, we have focused our efforts into forming a network of schools working together to reshape the future of Adventist education. Now three years later, we are in management agreements with three schools (soon to be four!), working with administrators and teachers to impact the lives of students and families around North America. This progress is all possible because of God and the hard working faculty and staff of the Renaissance Network.

On January 26-28, 2014, we hosted our second semiannual conference of Renaissance Network principals, business managers, school managers, and AAF staff in Scottsdale, Arizona. The agenda included items such as developing 2014-2015 School Enhancement Plans; Professional Learning Communities; a unified teacher evaluation system; financial software, audits, policies and procedures; and achieving buy-in from the community. In addition, the principals presented exciting projects and incentives that they are implementing on each of their campuses. It was great to see our mission of creating a network of schools transforming the landscape of Adventist education becoming a reality.

DSCF3857One of the most exciting parts for us was see everyone passion for bettering their school and to see Adventist education thrive. One way we saw this was their clear enthusiasm among the participates for collaboration between the schools. They are excited to be apart of a network where teachers can work with teachers from other schools to develop best practices and learn new strategies.

As we plan for the 2014-2015 school year, we are energized by the response and ideas from all those who participated in our semiannual conference. We look forward to what this new year brings and seeing more collaboration among the schools.

But the most exciting part is that we can truly say we are a Network.

We’ve seen progress in the Renaissance Network that we only dreamed possible three years ago. We thank God for His guidance through the development of this program.  Continue reading…
